I like diversity. Without it, my life would be one boring continuous slog through sameness. I love trying different foods, meeting different people, seeing different scenery, and enjoying different experiences. But this diversity obtains because I desire it — there is no need for some bureaucrat to mandate it into my life. True diversity comes from the freedom to choose the best. In my professional life, I have worked with and befriended team members from Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Ireland, France, Italy, Turkey, Hungary, England, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Canada, and from all over the United States. These talented men and women were picked because they excelled in their chosen profession, not because of their looks or background. And because the companies I worked for wanted to pick the best people for the job, the natural outcome was a wide diversity of people, ideas and backgrounds. It was freedom, not the soft-racist cry for diversity at all costs, which made this outcome possible. And the companies were better off for having hired the best, not for filling some mandated quota.

That’s not how liberals see it, however. They believe diversity should be an end in itself. A hoary old chestnut of American liberalism is “Diversity is our strength.” Is that so? In my experience, it works the opposite way. When we look primarily for strength — the will and ability to accomplish the task at hand — diversity will be a natural side benefit. But when diversity is championed as the primary goal, it’s strength that suffers.

Don’t believe me? Well, let’s see what happens when filling quotas becomes more important than seeking out excellence. Let’s look at the police force of Dayton, Ohio.

The city’s Civil Service Board and the U.S. Department of Justice have agreed on a lower passing score for the police recruit exam after it was rejected because not enough blacks passed the exam.

Dayton has decided it is no longer seeking the best recruits for its police force; it’s more important for the police to look racially diverse. To fulfill this mandate, it decided to lower its standards, which means that less-qualified people are getting police jobs in Dayton. The quest for diversity for its own sake has resulted in lower-quality police officers. Diversity is our strength? Not in Dayton’s police force, it’s not.

This brings me to the main thrust of my article: the recent decision by the U.S. military to allow women into combat roles. I see this as another quest for diversity for its own sake, at the cost of getting the best soldiers for combat situations.

Lisa Benson

It’s often said that the primary purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. As a former military brat, I’d expand that saying: everything the military does should
fall under the rubric of its primary purpose. Whenever the military is asked to do something that reduces its ability to fulfill its primary purpose, the military should turn down that task. But since the American military is under the control of elected officials, it can easily fall prey to social experimentation and liberal do-goodery, such as putting women into combat.

In a scene from the cult film Joe vs. the Volcano, Joe’s boss Mr. Waturi asks repeatedly in a phone conversation, “I know he can get the job, but can he do the job?” Replace “he” with “she” and you have the key question to ask about placing women in combat roles. For the most part, women are neither as big nor as muscular as men. This means that women wanting to fill combat positions, where strength and endurance are key to survival, will be at a marked disadvantage from the beginning. If I were an army private wounded in combat, I would want my squad mate to be strong enough to toss me over one shoulder and run me out of danger. I wouldn’t care whether my mate’s first name were Sam or Samantha; I’m focused solely on the end result. But the likelihood of a Samantha being able to execute that life-saving task is far less than it is for a Sam.

“But Captain, there are strong women who can pass the physical requirements.” Sure, there are some very fit women who can pass the requirements, but they are the exception, not the rule. And I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that when the desired number of women fail to meet the physical requirements for military service, the number-crunchers’ first instinct will be to lower the requirements, just the way it was done in Dayton. End result: fewer prepared combat troops and more casualties in battle. How is this a good thing again?

Gary Varvel

There is also the question of unit cohesion and behavior of the troops during combat. John Luddy wrote the following for the Heritage Foundation back in July 27, 1994:

History shows that the presence of women has had a devastating impact on the effectiveness of men in battle. For example, it is a common misperception that Israel allows women in combat units. In fact, women have been barred from combat in Israel since 1950, when a review of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War showed how harmful their presence could be. The study revealed that men tried to protect and assist women rather than continue their attack. As a result, they not only put their own lives in greater danger, but also jeopardized the survival of the entire unit. The study further revealed that unit morale was damaged when men saw women killed and maimed on the battlefield.

Ignoring the lessons learned from 1948, Israel decided in 2000 to put women back into active combat roles. My response echoes that of Mr. Waturi: I know she can get the job, but can she do the job? Time will tell, but hopefully not at a high cost in blood and lives.

“Diversity is our strength,” liberals like to claim. But when they value diversity more than strength — more than human life — the end result is often weakness, and it can have a terrible cost. That’s what happened to the police force in Dayton, Ohio, and it’s what happens each time liberals push for diversity for its own sake. In the end, liberals prove Quinn’s First Law to be in full effect: Liberalism always generates the exact opposite of its stated intent.

Now hear this!Victor Davis Hanson writes so very well. I wish I had a modicum of his talent, but I’ll get by with just pointing people to his writing instead. Go read a recent article that ties together Helen Thomas, Turkey, and the recent PR nightmare of the “peace flotilla” sent to Gaza. To whet your appetite, here is how he sums up the current situation for Israel, but go read the whole thing.

Israelis should assume by now that whether they act tentatively or strongly, the negative reaction will be the same. Therefore why not project the image of a strong, unapologetic country to a world that has completely lost its moral bearings, and is more likely to respect Israel’s strength than its past concern for meeting an impossible global standard?

How odd that the more the activists, political leaders, and media figures issue moral strictures against Israel, the more they prove abjectly amoral. And the more they seek to pressure Israel, the more they are liberating it to do what it feels it must.

I haven’t written anything about the fighting between Hamas and Fatah, but Cox and Forkum do a masterful job in showing the difference between these two groups. In case you miss it, they follow up with a clear explanation.

Six of One

“Palestinian moderates”? It was Fatah’s Abbas who refused to disarm Palestinian militant groups, including Hamas and the “armed wing” of his own party, even after continued terrorist attacks. It was Fatah terrorists who claimed joint responsibility with Hamas for the suicide-bombing mother who murdered four people. Abbas has called Israel the “Zionist enemy”. It is Fatah whose name means “conquest” and whose logo still includes an AK-47 and a grenade.

There’s so little difference between Hamas and Fatah that you can barely tell them apart: Fatah photo and Hamas photo. The only real difference is that Hamas is more open about its intent to destroy Isreal.

Did you hear the big news about peace in the Middle East? I’m not all that surprised if you didn’t, but it is news, nonetheless. In a meeting in Saudi Arabia, Arab leaders talked about how they were so ready to have peace with Israel. Yay! Peace in our time! They said that the Arab nations would establish normal diplomatic ties with Israel just as soon as Israel stopped being such a bully to its neighbors. Speaking of neighbors, let’s look at the map to the right showing the Arab nations in green and that tiny sliver of Israeli blue. With that map in mind, here is what Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said at the recent meeting about the necessary steps to peace with Israel:

“Once Israel returns occupied land and comes to an agreement with the Palestinians, returns occupied land to Syria and comes to an agreement with them, and it resolves its land issues with Lebanon, Arab states will immediately establish relations.”

Faisal is saying that the Israelis need to give up the lands they paid for in blood when their oh-so-peaceful Arab neighbors attacked them, not once, but four times. And notice that it is Israel’s responsibility to kiss and make up with the Palestinians, Syria, and Lebanon before the Arab states in green will even recognize that there is a nation-state called Israel. Until then, we will see more maps with no Israel. Captain Ed of Captain’s Quarters has a reminder of what this land-for-peace idea has produced in the not-so-distant past:

The Saudis want Israel to commit to the concept of land for peace. Yet when Israel withdrew from Gaza, pulling out their settlements along with the IDF, did peace erupt all over? Most decidedly, no. The Palestinians used Gaza as a launch pad for their rockets, dropping them indiscriminately into Israeli towns, with only Palestinian incompetence keeping more civilians from dying. When that stopped amusing them, Hamas crossed into Israel to abduct Gilad Shalit, whom they still hold for ransom. Under those circumstances, why would Israel accept land for peace when they know they will not get it?

But even if Israel were to pretend that giving up its land would yield positive results this time around, the “peace offer” outlined by Faisal would still require Israel to apologize for its existence to people who indiscriminately launch rockets into its civilian population. And these people have made it clear that they don’t want to make nice with Israel; they just want Israel to vanish away. It reminds me of the famous scene in Goldfinger, with James Bond strapped to a table and a deadly laser moving closer to him. Bond asks the villain, “Do you expect me to talk?” The response is, “No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!” That, in essence, is what the Arab world has been saying to Israel for sixty years now.

Land for peace is the talk of the Arab conference, as stated by an anonymous former Saudi official: “What we’re saying is, accept the principle of land for peace, that it’s the basis for future negotiations, then we can work out the details.” But the cesspool Gaza has become demonstrates clearly that swapping land for peace should be as anathema to Israel as swapping freedom for security is to Americans. But based on what Faisal said at the Arab conference, land for peace seems to be the Arabs’ one-trick pony. “We cannot change the plan because it offers peace, and changing it would mean we’re no longer offering peace.” Yeah, it’s great discussing issues with someone who is so willing to compromise.

But why should the Arab nations want to compromise when Prime Minister Olmert is willing to compromise for them? Cox and Forkum did a good job of showing Prime Minister Olmert’s attitude toward any peaceful gesture by Israel’s Arab neighbors.

Whisper Peace

I just think it’s hard to discuss peace with any group whose flag shows exactly how they plan to achieve peace.

One of the dangers of working in a coal mine is the presence of methane gas. It’s odorless and colorless, making it very hard to detect. In the old days, when miners used candles or lanterns to light their way, they could easily explode the gas. Or if the gas didn’t explode, it could replace the oxygen in an enclosed mine shaft and lead to asphyxiation. Miners were understandably concerned over either occurrence. But how do you detect an invisible, odorless gas? You could put an uncovered flame on a long pole and hold it out in front of you, but intentionally triggering an explosion in a confined underground area is not a good idea.

To combat this threat, many miners would take a cage with some common canaries in it down the mine shaft with them to act as an early warning system. The birds, smaller and with a much faster metabolism, would react to the presence of methane long before the miners did. If the canaries started to wobble on their perches or fell off, the miners would know methane was present and had enough time to clear out.

For many years, canaries served as an early warning system for miners. And today, the Jewish people serve much the same role as an early warning system for Western nations. Adolf Hitler was quite clear about his hatred of Jews in Mein Kampf, but people didn’t recognize the threat he would become to Europe. When he rose to power and started making life difficult for Jews in Germany, people again failed to see how he would come to menace Europe and the world. Had Hitler been stopped as soon as his anti-Semitic goals were known, all of Europe would have been spared much destruction and death. The Jews in Germany provided an early-warning system to show the danger of Hitler’s goals, but the nations of the world ignored the signs.

And Jews serve much the same function as an early-warning system today. There exist people who hate Jews with a passion and fervor that drives them to murder and destruction. We can sit back and pretend we have nothing to worry about because it’s all just some old land squabble in Asia. Or we could convince ourselves that we aren’t in any danger when many millions of people chant “Death to Israel” on Fridays. Besides, why should we care if people on the other side of the world want to kill Jews and are actively engaged in killing them? It’s not like their violence will spill over to other people.

Who are these people who willingly carry out death and destruction on the Jews and others? They are the followers of Islam. Does this mean that every follower of Islam is building bombs in his basement and plotting how to do the most damage in a crowded area? Of course not. But there is a common thread going through every link in the above paragraph. Hint: the perpetrators are all Muslims.

Don’t believe me? Well, you didn’t look at the above links, I guess. How about this interesting editorial coming out of Iran?

Iranian newspapers Kehyan and and Resalat have urged Muslims around the world to prepare for a ‘great war’ to destroy the State of Israel.

The newspapers published the editorials, translated from Persian by MEMRI , the Middle East translation service, to mark ‘Quds’ day on October 20, an Iranian ‘holiday’ calling for the “liberation” of Jerusalem and war against Israel.

“Hizbullah destroyed at least half of Israel in the Lebanon war… Now only half the path (to its destruction) remains,” an editorial in the conservative Keyhan newspaper declared.

“It was proven that, by means of an offensive operation that need not be equal to Israel’s moves, it is possible to neutralize the Zionist navy,” the article said triumphantly.

It continued: “Just as in one 33-day war more than 50 percent of Israel was destroyed, and the hope of its supporters for the continued life of this regime was broken, it is likely that in the next battle, the second half will also collapse.”

“On that day… Jordan will not be able to prevent the Jordanian Islamists from operating through the long Jordan-Palestine border, and the millions of Egyptian Islamists… will not let the Sinai-Israel border remain quiet, and the Syrian Golan Heights will not remain as a (mere) observer of the battle. That day is not so far off.”

By choosing to focus on Islam, I know I have lost some readers as they have gone elsewhere. Some of these are probably Muslim readers who visit infrequently from the Middle East, and some are no doubt those people who refuse to accept or even see the things I’m pointing out. But ignoring the world around us is not a recipe for success or safety.

For the rest of you who have read all the way to this point, I invite you to carefully read the next few articles as I explore more into the nature of Islam and the terrorist threat confronting us. Some of what you will read may be familiar to you, depending on the ways you gather news and follow current events and history. But I’m sure at least some of what I’ll be posting will be new to you.

For the next 5-6 days, I’ll be taking a closer look at Islam and its followers. I’m not doing this because I hate Muslims, but because we all deserve to know the truth. And if things don’t change, there is a real chance of death and destruction, both in the West and in the Middle East.

Clicking on A Look Into Islam will bring up a listing of all these posts after they are written.

Well, the U.N. Security Council passed Resolution 1701 calling for a ceasefire between Israel and the terrorist thugs of Hezbollah. Cue the news media’s orgasmic paroxysms of joy. Peace! Finally, we have peace for our time! Release the white doves and put flowers in the rifle barrels. Peace! We finally have peace!

Yeah, right.

The problem is that Lebanon’s army can’t force Hezbollah to disarm. Here is the news as reported in The Australian News site:

IT was supposed to be the day the maligned Lebanese army took control of the country’s borders and policed the UN ceasefire.

Instead, the military commanders were left humiliated and troops stranded as Hezbollah told them not to disarm its fighters.

The first infantry units were preparing to head south when Hezbollah showed who controls the area by announcing it would not surrender its weapons.

General Michel Sleiman, commander-in-chief of the Lebanese army, and his lieutenants had been invited to join cabinet meetings to finalise plans to deploy the 15,000-strong force south of the Litani River.

But they were lectured by Hezbollah’s two ministers in the coalition Government on what the army could and could not do.

What a surprise! Hezbollah appears to have its own agenda and doesn’t want to kowtow to the Lebanese government. This is something that Orson Scott Card wrote about back on July 16, 2006, before Israel launched its land campain:

If Israel sends its troops into southern Lebanon, you can be sure that it will be condemned as a violation of “Lebanese sovereignty.”

What Lebanese sovereignty?

Either the Lebanese government controls southern Lebanon or it doesn’t.

If it is sovereign Lebanese territory, then Lebanon as an entirety is responsible for the terror missile attacks launched against Israeli civilians by the Hezbollah forces that openly rule there. Therefore, Lebanon has committed acts of war against Israel, and Israel is perfectly justified in any military action it takes against the entirety of Lebanon.

But if the Lebanese government declares that it is not responsible for missiles launched from that region of their nominal territory, then by that admission they confess that it is hot territory for which the Lebanese government claims responsibility. In which case, Hezbollah is the ruler of that territory (which it is), and Israel, regardless of lines on a map, has a right to invade Hezbollah territory and destroy the capacity of that enemy to make war against them.

It appears that the Lebanese government doesn’t control southern Lebanon after all. Are you really surprised?

UPDATE (8/14/2006 4:39:48 PM): Looks like the dynamic duo of Cox and Forkum have identified this same problem:

Disarmed?

The useless U.N. Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 1701 calling on a cease fire in Lebanon between the Israeli military and the Hezbollah thugs funded and armed by Iran.

Interestingly enough at the time of this writing, the lead graphic on the U.N.’s page for the “Situation in the Middle East”, has some text about the fighting in Lebanon, but contains a shifting image of an oil spill with the following caption highlighted by me: “The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is gravely concerned about the impact of an oil spill along Lebanon’s coast.”

UN wacky priorities

But I digress.

Every time I hear someone gush about how wonderful this resolution is, I get a flashback of Neville Chamberlain waving a bit of paper and proclaiming, “I believe it is peace for our time.” And I think this will be as effective as that resolution was. I’m not the only one who see this as meaningless. Hezbollah thug-in-chief, Sheik Hassan, also sees this as meaningless for peace:

He called continued resistance to the Israel offensive “our natural right.”

The Shiite cleric also predicted more hard fighting to come.

“We must not make a mistake, not in the resistance, the government or the people, and believe that the war has ended. The war has not ended. There have been continued strikes and continued casualties,” he said in a taped television address.

Claudia Rosett of National Review Online recognizes this cease fire for what it really is. It won’t be a time of Hezbollah beating their swords into plowshares and singing “Kumbaya” arm-in-arm with Israelis.

Unfortunately, if Resolution 1701 has any effect at all, its real meaning is that we now embark on a period in which Hezbollah will seize the opportunity to regroup and reload. The feeble and compromised mix of U.N. peacekeepers and the Lebanese army, which is the force authorized in this resolution, will fail to stop them. Iran and Syria will proceed apace with their terrorist infection and subjugation of Lebanon. The U.N. will wave around this latest piece of paper to try to prevent Israel from defending itself, or, for that matter, defending the rest of us against the “Death to Israel! Death to America!” Hezbollah agenda. Iran’s President Ahmadinejad, enjoying yet another confirmation of the U.N.’s mincing impotence in the face of guns, bombs, rockets, and terror, will continue his fevered preparations to roll out the nuclear bomb.

Cox and Forkum sum it up well with their political cartoon titled, “Snatching Defeat”:

Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory

UPDATE (8/12/2006 10:25:54 AM): John Hinderaker of Power Line sees that this call for peace is destined to fail:

So Hezbollah is to be disarmed. By whom? When? How? The resolution is silent. In fact, the disarming of Hezbollah isn’t going to happen; it can’t, unless Hezbollah unilaterally decides to disband. And why would it do that? Likewise, the resolution decrees that no weapons will be shipped into Lebanon except with the approval of that country’s government. That isn’t going to happen either. Iran and Syria will continue to supply Hezbollah.

So the agreement will fail. Hezbollah will emerge with heightened stature as the first Arab force to fight Israel without being crushed. And Israel will have to renew the battle at some future date, under conditions that will almost certainly be more difficult than at present.

So it’s hard for me to see this deal as anything but a defeat for all who want to vigorously oppose the advance of Islamic imperialism in the Middle East and beyond.

Among the Little Green Footballs crowd, the Reuters News Service is often referred to as “Al-Reuters” because of their obvious leanings towards anti-Israeli and anti-American organizations and people. You can file this Al-Reuters photo of Beirut under the CBS memo category of “fake but accurate” because it is just as fake.

Fake Smoke

In case the link above doesn’t take you to the Reuters’ photo, you can see what the page looks like here. If the forged nature of the picture isn’t blatently obvious to you, check out the photo at Little Green Football as they show evidence of forgery.

UPDATE (8/6/2006 8:50:18 AM): And Al-Reuters pulls the photo with the comment of “Photo editing software was improperly used on this image.” Well, duh!

Here is the corrected photo as posted by Al-Reuters. Notice the foreground as well as the smoke had been altered.

Rerelease

Moiz Syed has created a page that lists the current number of deaths as Israel hunts down the Hezbollah terrorists. I have attached a truncated image of the page as posted on BoingBoing, but it gives you an idea of what Syed is doing. When I pointed out the page to TPK, her tongue-in-cheek response was, “Only 4 UN deaths? Those Israeli slackers!” But she is evil that way. It is interesting to note some of the issues that have come to light because of the UN deaths, namely that Hezbollah has been using the UN people as (unwilling?) human shields for its murderous work.

But what is Syed’s purpose for creating this page? Is it to show just how much more effective the Israeli military force is over the Hezbollah terrorists? I notice that there is no distinction drawn between innocent Lebanese civilians and the Hezbollah terrorists who are cowardly blending in among them. Or is it Syed’s purpose to show how uneven this conflict has been? If so, does he expect Israel to stop fighting just so Hezbollah can catch up in its death count? Please.

To put this conflict into perspective, Israeli deaths are close to 10% of the total at the time of this writing. If I were an Israeli military commander, I’d be pleased with this outcome because the first and foremost responsibility of the military is to win the war. Killing the enemy is an means to that end, and while it is desirable to avoid civilian deaths, it should not be a priority lest the enemy use your moral compunction against you. And there are times when civilian deaths simply cannot be avoided.

Here is one last way of putting these numbers into perspective. Based on Syed’s format, here are the military deaths in World War II for the U.S., Germany, and Japan; each coffin represents 10,000 dead.

Cox and Forkum sum up the current troubles in Lebanon with their latest political cartoon.

Giving Shelter

As criticism of Israel rises with the Lebanese death toll, it is paramount to remember: Hezbollah initiated this war by crossing the Lebanese border into Israel to kill eight Israeli soldiers and kidnap two more. Hezbollah then returned to take refuge in Lebanon, where the terrorist group enjoys a safe haven behind Lebanese human shields. The civilian casualties in Lebanon will continue to rise, as long as Lebanon continues to harbor Hezbollah. The responsibility for the death of every single Lebanese victim should be laid at the feet of Hezbollah, and any Lebanese who have supported Hezbollah’s base of operations in Lebanon.

Israel didn’t start this. But I hope that Israel will finish it. For those people who think it is a terrible thing that innocents are dying at the hands of Israeli forces, I remind them of Niven’s Laws, especially 1b:

1a – Never throw s*** at an armed man.
1b – Never stand next to someone who is throwing s*** at an armed man.
