Well, the U.N. Security Council passed Resolution 1701 calling for a ceasefire between Israel and the terrorist thugs of Hezbollah. Cue the news media’s orgasmic paroxysms of joy. Peace! Finally, we have peace for our time! Release the white doves and put flowers in the rifle barrels. Peace! We finally have peace!

Yeah, right.

The problem is that Lebanon’s army can’t force Hezbollah to disarm. Here is the news as reported in The Australian News site:

IT was supposed to be the day the maligned Lebanese army took control of the country’s borders and policed the UN ceasefire.

Instead, the military commanders were left humiliated and troops stranded as Hezbollah told them not to disarm its fighters.

The first infantry units were preparing to head south when Hezbollah showed who controls the area by announcing it would not surrender its weapons.

General Michel Sleiman, commander-in-chief of the Lebanese army, and his lieutenants had been invited to join cabinet meetings to finalise plans to deploy the 15,000-strong force south of the Litani River.

But they were lectured by Hezbollah’s two ministers in the coalition Government on what the army could and could not do.

What a surprise! Hezbollah appears to have its own agenda and doesn’t want to kowtow to the Lebanese government. This is something that Orson Scott Card wrote about back on July 16, 2006, before Israel launched its land campain:

If Israel sends its troops into southern Lebanon, you can be sure that it will be condemned as a violation of “Lebanese sovereignty.”

What Lebanese sovereignty?

Either the Lebanese government controls southern Lebanon or it doesn’t.

If it is sovereign Lebanese territory, then Lebanon as an entirety is responsible for the terror missile attacks launched against Israeli civilians by the Hezbollah forces that openly rule there. Therefore, Lebanon has committed acts of war against Israel, and Israel is perfectly justified in any military action it takes against the entirety of Lebanon.

But if the Lebanese government declares that it is not responsible for missiles launched from that region of their nominal territory, then by that admission they confess that it is hot territory for which the Lebanese government claims responsibility. In which case, Hezbollah is the ruler of that territory (which it is), and Israel, regardless of lines on a map, has a right to invade Hezbollah territory and destroy the capacity of that enemy to make war against them.

It appears that the Lebanese government doesn’t control southern Lebanon after all. Are you really surprised?

UPDATE (8/14/2006 4:39:48 PM): Looks like the dynamic duo of Cox and Forkum have identified this same problem:

Disarmed?

The useless U.N. Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 1701 calling on a cease fire in Lebanon between the Israeli military and the Hezbollah thugs funded and armed by Iran.

Interestingly enough at the time of this writing, the lead graphic on the U.N.’s page for the “Situation in the Middle East”, has some text about the fighting in Lebanon, but contains a shifting image of an oil spill with the following caption highlighted by me: “The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is gravely concerned about the impact of an oil spill along Lebanon’s coast.”

UN wacky priorities

But I digress.

Every time I hear someone gush about how wonderful this resolution is, I get a flashback of Neville Chamberlain waving a bit of paper and proclaiming, “I believe it is peace for our time.” And I think this will be as effective as that resolution was. I’m not the only one who see this as meaningless. Hezbollah thug-in-chief, Sheik Hassan, also sees this as meaningless for peace:

He called continued resistance to the Israel offensive “our natural right.”

The Shiite cleric also predicted more hard fighting to come.

“We must not make a mistake, not in the resistance, the government or the people, and believe that the war has ended. The war has not ended. There have been continued strikes and continued casualties,” he said in a taped television address.

Claudia Rosett of National Review Online recognizes this cease fire for what it really is. It won’t be a time of Hezbollah beating their swords into plowshares and singing “Kumbaya” arm-in-arm with Israelis.

Unfortunately, if Resolution 1701 has any effect at all, its real meaning is that we now embark on a period in which Hezbollah will seize the opportunity to regroup and reload. The feeble and compromised mix of U.N. peacekeepers and the Lebanese army, which is the force authorized in this resolution, will fail to stop them. Iran and Syria will proceed apace with their terrorist infection and subjugation of Lebanon. The U.N. will wave around this latest piece of paper to try to prevent Israel from defending itself, or, for that matter, defending the rest of us against the “Death to Israel! Death to America!” Hezbollah agenda. Iran’s President Ahmadinejad, enjoying yet another confirmation of the U.N.’s mincing impotence in the face of guns, bombs, rockets, and terror, will continue his fevered preparations to roll out the nuclear bomb.

Cox and Forkum sum it up well with their political cartoon titled, “Snatching Defeat”:

Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory

UPDATE (8/12/2006 10:25:54 AM): John Hinderaker of Power Line sees that this call for peace is destined to fail:

So Hezbollah is to be disarmed. By whom? When? How? The resolution is silent. In fact, the disarming of Hezbollah isn’t going to happen; it can’t, unless Hezbollah unilaterally decides to disband. And why would it do that? Likewise, the resolution decrees that no weapons will be shipped into Lebanon except with the approval of that country’s government. That isn’t going to happen either. Iran and Syria will continue to supply Hezbollah.

So the agreement will fail. Hezbollah will emerge with heightened stature as the first Arab force to fight Israel without being crushed. And Israel will have to renew the battle at some future date, under conditions that will almost certainly be more difficult than at present.

So it’s hard for me to see this deal as anything but a defeat for all who want to vigorously oppose the advance of Islamic imperialism in the Middle East and beyond.

A frequent contributor at Little Green Footballs is a woman who goes by the alias Zombie. She has done a marvelous job of visiting various demonstrations, rallies, and general nutty activities of the Left. Thanks to her dedicated service, the activities of the Left can be seen in all their disturbing glory.

In addition to her photos of rallies, Zombie has posted a page outlining the various categories of fraud as perpetrated by Reuters. She describes the four categories this way:

  1. Digitally manipulating images after the photographs have been taken.
  2. Photographing scenes staged by Hezbollah and presenting the images as if they were of authentic spontaneous news events.
  3. Photographers themselves staging scenes or moving objects, and presenting photos of the set-ups as if they were naturally occurring.
  4. Giving false or misleading captions to otherwise real photos that were taken at a different time or place.

Kudos to Zombie for categorizing the fraud so nicely and putting it all together on one page. Go read it now. And show it to a liberal friend.

P.S. — If Reuters is guilty of this amount of fraud and bias, what is the likelihood that it is the only news service thus guilty? Or is Reuters just the most egregious of the lot?

Moiz Syed has created a page that lists the current number of deaths as Israel hunts down the Hezbollah terrorists. I have attached a truncated image of the page as posted on BoingBoing, but it gives you an idea of what Syed is doing. When I pointed out the page to TPK, her tongue-in-cheek response was, “Only 4 UN deaths? Those Israeli slackers!” But she is evil that way. It is interesting to note some of the issues that have come to light because of the UN deaths, namely that Hezbollah has been using the UN people as (unwilling?) human shields for its murderous work.

But what is Syed’s purpose for creating this page? Is it to show just how much more effective the Israeli military force is over the Hezbollah terrorists? I notice that there is no distinction drawn between innocent Lebanese civilians and the Hezbollah terrorists who are cowardly blending in among them. Or is it Syed’s purpose to show how uneven this conflict has been? If so, does he expect Israel to stop fighting just so Hezbollah can catch up in its death count? Please.

To put this conflict into perspective, Israeli deaths are close to 10% of the total at the time of this writing. If I were an Israeli military commander, I’d be pleased with this outcome because the first and foremost responsibility of the military is to win the war. Killing the enemy is an means to that end, and while it is desirable to avoid civilian deaths, it should not be a priority lest the enemy use your moral compunction against you. And there are times when civilian deaths simply cannot be avoided.

Here is one last way of putting these numbers into perspective. Based on Syed’s format, here are the military deaths in World War II for the U.S., Germany, and Japan; each coffin represents 10,000 dead.

Senator John “F#$%ing” Kerry, Democrat from Massachusetts, failed Presidential candidate, and all-around dork, took advantage of a campaign trip for Democrat Governor Jennifer Granholm to bash President Bush and inflate his own ego. Talking about the current conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, Sen. Kerry pontificated: “If I was president, this wouldn’t have happened.” And how would the French-looking Senator have prevented this? As he sees it, the problem is how President Bush has concentrated so much on Iraq. “The president has been so absent on diplomacy when it comes to issues affecting the Middle East,” Kerry said. “We’re going to have a lot of ground to make up (in 2008) because of it.”

So diplomacy would have saved the day, but only if Senator Kerry were in charge. But the Senator doesn’t explain how you can negotiate with someone who wants you dead. Hezbollah has shown that its desire and ultimate goal is a world without the nation of Israel, so where is the middle ground when one side wants the other side dead and gone? Would Hezbollah settle for just killing half of Israel? Would they be willing to just maim and deal out grievous bodily harm as a compromise?

Not bloody likely.

But here’s the kicker of Kerry’s comments, as quoted in the news article:

Hezbollah guerillas should have been targeted with other terrorist organizations, such as al-Qaida and the Taliban, which operate in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Kerry said. However, Bush has focused military strength on Iraq.

“This is about American security and Bush has failed. He has made it so much worse because of his lack of reality in going into Iraq….We have to destroy Hezbollah,” he said.

Note that the “Kerry solution” entails going after various terrorist organizations “such as al-Qaida and the Taliban,” and, by his crystal-clear hindsight, Hezbollah. Instead, says he, President Bush made the mistake of taking out Iraq, and as Kerry already mentioned, there were no terrorists there in Iraq. And Senator Kerry explains what needs to be done: “We have to destroy Hezbollah.”

So what happened to the art of diplomacy that Senator Kerry loves so dear?

Cox and Forkum sum up the current troubles in Lebanon with their latest political cartoon.

Giving Shelter

As criticism of Israel rises with the Lebanese death toll, it is paramount to remember: Hezbollah initiated this war by crossing the Lebanese border into Israel to kill eight Israeli soldiers and kidnap two more. Hezbollah then returned to take refuge in Lebanon, where the terrorist group enjoys a safe haven behind Lebanese human shields. The civilian casualties in Lebanon will continue to rise, as long as Lebanon continues to harbor Hezbollah. The responsibility for the death of every single Lebanese victim should be laid at the feet of Hezbollah, and any Lebanese who have supported Hezbollah’s base of operations in Lebanon.

Israel didn’t start this. But I hope that Israel will finish it. For those people who think it is a terrible thing that innocents are dying at the hands of Israeli forces, I remind them of Niven’s Laws, especially 1b:

1a – Never throw s*** at an armed man.
1b – Never stand next to someone who is throwing s*** at an armed man.

Much has been said and written about the current fighting between Israel and Iran-backed terrorist organization of Hezbollah based in southern Lebanon. I’ve heard many liberals at work and on the radio say that Israel should not be attacking Hezbollah in Lebanon. After all, why is Israel waging war in another sovereign nation? It’s funny that none of them seem to notice that Hezbollah was waging war in another sovereign nation, namely Israel, and that Hezbollah and other Arab terrorists organizations and nations have the goal of a Middle East without an Israel. But they are not the only people to envision a world without the nation of Israel.

Here is how CNN sums up the current struggle in one paragraph:

Israel launched an extensive bombing campaign against the militant Islamist group after it abducted two Israeli soldiers and killed three others in a raid into northern Israel last Wednesday. Since Thursday, Hezbollah has fired 750 rockets into Israel, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Israel is doing its best to avoid civilian deaths in their bombing runs, but even with accurate guided munitions, civilians will die, and part of the blame lies not with the Israelis dropping the bombs on military and strategic targets, but on Hezbollah which is blocking civilians from fleeing the combat zone. And notice that while Israel is targeting the Hezbollah fighters while Hezbollah is indiscriminately tossing rockets into Israel. They obviously don’t care whether their rockets kill soldiers or civilians.

There is a world of difference between these two. It’s a shame that more people can’t recognize that Israel is fighting for their lives. Cox and Forkum points out the disproportion response going on.

disproportionate response

The criticism that Israel is using a “disproportionate response” to the kidnappings of its soldiers is an attempt to morally disarm Israel and make Israel out to be a bully. This notion is ludicrous when considered in the full context: Hezbollah and Hamas initiated the current crisis in an ongoing war against Israel’s right to exist. Notice that no one cried “disproportionate response” when Hamas demanded 1,200 prisoners in exchange for one Israeli hostage. Hamas and Hezbollah aren’t playing a game of proportions, why should Israel?

I’m all for Israel to be victorious over the terrorist thugs who wish to see Israel gone.
