I have to wonder sometimes about the ways people are directed to this site. I’m surprised at the number of times people search specifically for my image of drowned buses in New Orleans. Then there are the searches for some really strange stuff. Someone in Ankara, Turkey, did a search for “illegal porn list” and found my listing of articles. I don’t think he found what he wanted. I knew I would get a few hits when I wrote about Kate Winslet’s nude scene being removed from people’s copies of Titanic at their own request. But I still have to wonder about the people who search for “kate winslet nude” from places like Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
I’ve not done much to pimp my site, other than making sure the major search engines crawl my entries and commenting on a few other blogs. People talk about getting an “instalanch” if they are linked by Instapundit. I’ve not aspired to that level of attention, but I can gauge how funny or insightful my comments are on Little Green Footballs based on the return hits I get from there.
Speaking of hits, I have noticed that the traffic coming to my site has become more and more international in scope. The vast majority of hits are coming from the U.S., but based on the last 100 hits, there are some other countries reaching my site (in decreasing order): the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Canada, Turkey, Romania, Portugal, Japan, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates (the Kate Winslet perv above) and another 4% of unknown origin.
I have to laugh at “unknown origin” when that shows up in my hit logs. I can almost see people introducing themselves at a party — “I’m from AOL.com, and Fred here comes from an ISP in Duluth. Where are you from?” “Oh, I’m from Unknown Origin.” Ah. Geek humor, but then I’m pretty geeky.
